Nottoway Indian Julie
Jennings hosted a Day of Indian Culture on Friday, November 8. She erected
a 28' teepee in the
grassy area on the front façade of our building. She also brought with her
drums,
animal skins, artifacts,
and Indian textiles. Hundreds of kids, community members, and elderly patrons
came to talk with Julie,
sit in the teepee, and learn about local history. Julie also led a Basket
Weaving Workshop on Saturday, November 9 for kids. Over 20 kids registered, filling our maximum
limit. They just loved making their baskets and left feeling really proud of
their work.

The Rawls Library hosts An
Evening of Poetry, featuring the Poet Laureate of Virginia, George Garrett,
on November 18 at
7:00 PM. Flanked by rising poets, Mr. Garrett will deliver compelling poetry to
the
people of Tidewater Virginia. A contributor to every genre, Mr. Garrett has enjoyed a varied literary
career. His poetry, like the
man himself, seems at once familiar, approachable, and awe-inspiring.
A
wonderful sampling of his
verse can be found in The Days of Our Lives Lie in Fragments: Old and New
Poems
1957-1997. This year Mr.
Garrett was named Virginia's Poet Laureate. He is also the Henry Hoyns
Professor
of Creative Writing Emeritus at
the University of Virginia. Mr. Garrett headlines a
library program
for all ages. The event offers the community an opportunity to
hear poets share their
work, describe their
creative process, and offer advice to young writers. The
library anticipates great
coverage from both the
Tidewater News and the Virginian-Pilot. Local teachers
have assigned the
program as extra-credit.
Our new audiovisual centers
arrive just before Thanksgiving. Each center will offer DVD, CD, audio and
videocassette
access. The centers look modern, comfortable, and lovely.
