In 1924 a group of ladies from Smithfield went to the town council and asked for assistance to start a local library.  The council voted to allow one room of the community building, built shelves, and gave $2.50 a month to support the library.  With donations of books and money theyd in January of 1925 with 100 books on the shelves.  In 1942 the library moved to the courthouse on Main Street in order to have more room.  In 1945 Miss Cora Leigh Chapman died and left her home to be used as a library.  The library was renamed and became the Benjamin P. Chapman Memorial Library.  In 1974 we became a part of the Walter Cecil Rawls Regional Library System.   We moved to our present location in 1989, which is the old Smithfield High School on James Street.  The name was again changed to the Isle of Wight County Library/Smithfield Branch.  We offer at our library numerous genealogy resources.
